Crowfoot Library Display 2020

The picture of Rock Isle Lake at Sunshine in Banff National Park is made with Marquetry (painting in wood). Sixteen difference wood veneers were used to create the picture. The image was first drawn and then used to cut pieces from contrasting veneers, depending on color, grain and texture. The pieces were joined together like a jigsaw puzzle and the finished picture was glued to a piece of MDF. Strips of veneer were used to create the surrounding frame. The edges and back of the MDF are also veneered. The Marquetry picture was finished with a number of coats of varnish, polished and waxed.

Veneers used in this picture include African and American Walnut, Macassar Ebony, dyed blue English Sycamore, fiddleback Maple, white Anigre, Japanese Ash, dyed green Tulipier, forest green Koto, Zebrano, Lacewood, Indian Laurel, Red Gum, spalted Beech, Walnut and Mahogany burls,
